UN
Women, Liberia Sign US$6.5M to End Violence against
Women
IF ever there was a campaign in
need of a serious transformation it would be the "16 days
of Activism for No Violence
Against Women and Children".
"It is time we understand that
the violence not only has long-lasting consequences for women, but
also their families, the community, and the country at large". The
16-day period also includes important dates like World Aids Day
(December 1) and Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence
Against Women (December 6).
According to UN Women, at least
one in three women in the world has suffered from violence, usually
by someone known to her. Thousands of women are expected to take
part in demonstrations opposing violence against women in several
Italian cities on Saturday 26 November under the Not one less
banner, which also characterised recent protests across Latin America. We must
challenge deep-rooted social norms and attitudes that lead to
gender-based violence. Angus Violence against Women Partnership
(AVAWP) has organised a number of awareness-raising activities
throughout the campaign. We are joining forces together with Member
States to put an end to violence against women.
Studies have found higher rates of violence among women
experiencing multiple discriminations, including indigenous women,
lesbian and bisexual women, and women with
disabilities.
More than 20 events and
initiatives have been finalized so far for this year's Dal 16 Days
campaign, including a number of talks with notable
individuals.
As in the rest of the world,
levels of violence in Australia are intolerable.
Australia and its partners in
the region are responding to violence against women in a targeted
way.
Your small contribution could
help to end the cycle of abuse.
"We have come again to ask our
media colleagues, our guests and the listening public to help us
strengthen this campaign with the communities, the churches, the
mosques, the schools, the traditional leaders and stakeholders to
end gender based violence and prevent another woman, another man,
another girl, another boy and another child from being abused, from
being raped, from being sodomized and from being deprived to live
as the result of sexual gender based violence".
Under the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals, gender equality and women's
empowerment is a stand-alone goal for all countries, including
Australia.
Residence Life, DalOut, Get
Real, Allies at Dal and Student Health Promotion have teamed up to
organize a roaming information booth that will be set up in
different locations across campus on different days to provide
advice on how to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
We must be responsible to
ourselves and one another for our actions, making sure our sons
respect girls as their equals and our daughters realise that being
a woman does not limit their potential.
